Volcanic Activity in South Korea

Volcanic Activity in South Korea

There are a total of three volcanoes in South Korea. They are Mt. Baekdu, Mt. Halla, and Ulleung Island.

According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, Mt. Baekdu is the biggest volcano out of the three and last showed activity in 1903. It's height is 2,744m and begins to get steep around 1,800m above sea level. Due to the collapse of the summit, there is a caldera lake. During the Goreyo Dynasty, around 946-947 A.D., there were many large scale eruptions. Since then only small eruptions have occurred in the years "1014, 1201,1401, 1597, 1702, and 1903."

According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, Mt. Halla is located on Jeju Island and "was created by volcanic activities 1.8 million years ago." It contains a gentle slope and it's height is 1,950m, "its summit area has a tholoide form." It also contains a crater lake, various lava caves, and coastal waterfalls. Volcanic activity was last recorded during 1002 and 1007 A.D.

According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, Ulleung Island rose from underwater and it 984m above sea level. At the center of the island, a new volcano arose, now it is referred to as a "double volcano."

  2. Hi, Amber I also didn't know there were that many volcanoes. I really enjoy reading your blog every week. My country only has had four volcanoes none are active since thousands of years ago but possibly can be.
